A Guide to California’s New Organics Recycling Mandate (SB 1383)

If food waste were a country, it would be the third-highest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions after the United States and China. Closer to home, reducing food waste sent to California landfills is a critical component of the state’s strategy to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. California lawmakers recognized the risks associated with landfilled food waste and passed Senate Bill 1383. This new law requires organic waste collection and recycling services to divert 75 percent of the state’s organic waste from landfills by 2025. That’s the equivalent of more than 20 million tons per year. Here are the technologies and facilities Anaergia has developed and implemented to meet this ambitious goal.
