Anaergia in California

California’s new organic waste mandate – Senate Bill 1383 – set a goal of diverting 75% of organic waste, equivalent to 20 million tons per year, from statewide landfills by 2025. To help achieve this ambitious target, Anaergia has developed leading technologies and facilities that are active across California today

Key offerings:

  • Design, build, own, operate, and finance model
  • Operations and maintenance
  • Design, build, and service

Our Facilities

The Rialto Bioenergy Facility, located in Rialto, California, services the organic waste landfill diversion needs of municipalities and haulers under Senate Bill 1383.

This resource recovery facility converts 700 tons of landfill diverted organic waste and 300 tons of biosolids into renewable natural gas, clean water, and fertilizer.

Anaergia’s Organics Extrusion Press (OREX™) operates at Waste Management’s Sun Valley Recycling Park in Sun Valley, California, servicing the greater Los Angeles metro region. This 50 ton per hour OREX™ processing line cleans and polishes municipal solid waste and contaminated source separated organics. The wet fraction is delivered to Anaergia’s Rialto Bioenergy Facility for renewable natural gas conversion.

The Victor Valley Water Reclamation Authority will utilize Anaergia’s Omnivore high solids anaerobic digestion retrofit to triple capacity and increase redundancy of the existing digester infrastructure.

Sludge and food waste will be digested to generate biogas that will be conditioned and upgraded into pipeline quality natural gas utilizing systems.

The South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), also known as RethinkWaste, uses Anaergia’s OREX™ to extract the organic fraction from municipal solid waste and Source Separated Organics streams to generate renewable energy at multiple regional wastewater treatment plants.

Compliance Options and Opportunities

Achieving carbon neutrality requires forward-thinking and bold solutions. Anaergia’s locations in California are leading that charge in partnership with government agencies and new regulation to construct, upgrade, finance, and operate resource recovery facilities around the state. To reduce excessive food waste in landfills and resulting greenhouse gases, California lawmakers recently passed Senate Bill 1383. This new law requires organic waste collection and recycling services to divert 75 percent of the state’s organic waste from landfills by 2025.
