California’s Senate Bill 1383

If food waste were a country, it would be the third-highest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions after the United States and China. Closer to home, reducing food waste sent to California landfills is a critical component of the state’s strategy to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. California lawmakers recognized the risks associated with landfilled food waste and passed Senate Bill 1383. This new law requires organic waste collection and recycling services to divert 75 percent of the state’s organic waste from landfills by 2025. That’s the equivalent of more than 20 million tons per year. Here are the technologies and facilities Anaergia has developed and implemented to meet this ambitious goal.

Senate Bill 1383 Resources

Anaergia’s Rialto Bioenergy Facility

The Rialto Bioenergy Facility is the largest landfill diverted organic waste digester facility in North America addressing two pressing waste management issues in Southern California: food waste diversion from landfills and biosolids management. The Rialto Bioenergy Facility converts 700 tons per day of landfill diverted organic waste and 300 tons per day of biosolids into renewable natural gas, renewable electricity, and Class A fertilizer.

Anaergia Answers California’s Call to Action

California’s ambitious goals of carbon neutrality require bold solutions. Anaergia is leading the charge by partnering with government agencies and industry leaders to construct, upgrade, finance, and operate resource recovery facilities and green infrastructure around the State.

How San Mateo County Towns Are Diverting Organic Waste from Landfills

RethinkWaste, also known as the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), is a joint powers authority formed by eleven local government jurisdictions in San Mateo County, California. SBWMA utilizes Anaergia’s Organics Extrusion Press (OREX™) to extract the organic fraction from municipal solid waste and Source Separated Organics streams to generate renewable energy at multiple regional wastewater treatment plants.

Supporting Waste Management’s Landfill Diversion and Recycling Efforts

Anaergia’s OREX™ operates at Waste Management’s Sun Valley Recycling Park in Sun Valley, California, servicing the greater Los Angeles metro region.

The OREX reliably and efficiently separates solid waste streams into wet organic and dry fractions, driving significant value through both resource recovery and diversion. The OREX™ recovers over 90% of putrescible organics from mixed waste streams and diverts material away from landfills.
